A "wrapper" file that holds video and audio together. Plays everywhere — Windows Media Player, QuickTime, VLC, every iPhone, every Android. When we say "MP4", that's what's in the box.
MP3 Audio Container
An audio-only file format from the late '90s that became the universal language of music players. We export YouTube audio as MP3 so it'll play in any car stereo, smart speaker, or music app without conversion.
1080p Resolution
1920 pixels wide × 1080 pixels tall. The "p" means "progressive" (every line drawn each frame). This is the highest quality YouTube usually offers without paying for a Premium upload, and what most TVs natively display.
720p Resolution
1280×720 — what YouTube called "HD" before 1080p existed. On a phone screen smaller than a paperback book, you genuinely can't tell it apart from 1080p. The pragmatic default.
360p Resolution
640×360. Soft and small, but watchable. The whole point of this tier is filesize: a 360p hour-long video is around 80 MB instead of the 600 MB it'd be at 1080p.
Shorts Video Type
YouTube's vertical short-form videos (≤ 60 seconds), usually 1080×1920 or 720×1280 — phone-shaped instead of TV-shaped. They download identically to regular videos here, you just get a portrait-oriented file.
Bitrate Quality Knob
