What Is It

What is the Modified Bavarian Formula?

The Modified Bavarian Formula is the official grade conversion method standardised by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). Because grading systems worldwide operate on different scales — an 85% from Pakistan, a 3.8 GPA from the US, and a 7.5 CGPA from India cannot be directly compared — the formula resolves this by anchoring your grade between two fixed reference points: the highest possible score in your home system and the lowest acceptable passing score.

The closer your grade sits to your home system's maximum, the closer your German equivalent moves toward 1.0. A grade at the passing threshold converts to approximately 4.0. This proportional logic makes the formula fair across all grading systems without relying on lookup tables or fixed conversion charts.

German grade  =  1  +  3  ×  (Nmax  −  Nd)  ÷  (Nmax  −  Nmin)

NdYour obtained grade — exact value from your official transcript NmaxMaximum grade your home system awards — e.g., 100 for percentage, 4.0 for US GPA, 10 for CGPA NminMinimum passing grade in your home system — e.g., 40 or 50 for percentage, 2.0 for GPA

The result is rounded to one decimal place and clamped within 1.0–5.0. Any value above 4.0 falls into Nicht bestanden (fail). The formula is referenced in Anabin, the official German database for foreign qualifications.

How To Use

How to Calculate Your German Grade

Follow these four steps to get your converted grade instantly:

Type the highest possible grade in your system — 100 for percentage, 10 for CGPA, or 4.0 for US GPA.

2

Enter Passing Threshold

Enter the minimum grade to pass — commonly 40% or 50% for Pakistani universities, 2.0 for US GPA.

3

Enter Your Grade

Type your obtained grade from your official transcript in the same unit as the values above.

German Grading Scale

Understanding the German 1.0 – 5.0 Scale

Germany uses a 1.0 to 5.0 scale where lower numbers mean better performance — the reverse of most systems. A perfect score is 1.0, a satisfactory pass sits around 3.0, and 4.0 is the final acceptable pass. Anything above 4.0 is a fail.

  • 1.0 – 1.5 (Sehr gut): Excellent. Strong applicant for elite programs at TUM, RWTH, and LMU.
  • 1.6 – 2.5 (Gut): Good. Competitive at most German public universities for Engineering and CS master's.
  • 2.6 – 3.5 (Befriedigend): Satisfactory. May qualify at Fachhochschulen and some public university programs.
  • 3.6 – 4.0 (Ausreichend): Sufficient. Marginal pass — limited admissions options at research universities.
  • 4.1 – 5.0 (Nicht bestanden): Fail. Does not meet admission requirements for German universities.
💡

Note: Your converted grade is one factor. German universities also assess your motivation letter, recommendation letters, work experience, language proficiency (usually B2–C1 German or IELTS 6.5+ for English programs), and sometimes standardised test scores like GRE.

Pakistani Applicants

CGPA & Percentage to German Grade — Pakistan

For Pakistani students, the most common inputs are:

  • Percentage-based (HEC): Nmax = 100, Nmin = 40 or 50 (check your university regulations), Nd = your percentage
  • CGPA out of 4.0: Nmax = 4.0, Nmin = 2.0, Nd = your CGPA
  • CGPA out of 10: Nmax = 10, Nmin = 5.0, Nd = your CGPA

If unsure of your institution's minimum passing grade, check your official degree handbook or transcript legend. Using the wrong Nmin value will produce an inaccurate conversion — always confirm before applying.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The Modified Bavarian Formula is the official grade conversion method standardised by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). It uses your home system's maximum and minimum passing grade as anchors to proportionally map your grade onto Germany's 1.0 to 5.0 academic scale — ensuring proportional fairness across all grading systems globally.

A 2.0 (Gut) is competitive at most German public universities. TU Munich typically expects 1.6–2.0 for Engineering and CS. RWTH Aachen accepts around 1.8–2.3. LMU Munich expects 1.7–2.2 for sciences. Grade is one factor — motivation letter, language proof, and references matter significantly too.

For HEC-affiliated Pakistani universities, the standard minimum passing grade is either 40% or 50% depending on the institution and program. Check your university's official academic regulations or degree handbook. If you cannot locate the exact threshold, 40% is the conservative default for most Pakistani public universities.

Yes — the formula is system-agnostic. For US GPA (4.0 scale, 2.0 passing), enter Nmax=4.0, Nmin=2.0. For UK percentage (typically 40% pass), enter Nmax=100, Nmin=40. Always use the correct minimum passing value for your specific institution, not a generic assumption.

This calculator applies the standard Modified Bavarian Formula accurately for self-assessment. However, German universities conduct their own official evaluation through their admissions office or via uni-assist, Germany's central application service. Use this tool for planning — not as a substitute for the university's official grade assessment.

Nicht bestanden means "not passed." Any German grade above 4.0 falls in this band. In a conversion context, this happens when your obtained grade is near your home system's minimum passing threshold — your proportional performance maps to below the German passing point. This does not mean you failed your degree, only that the conversion result falls below Germany's acceptable threshold.

The Modified Bavarian Formula itself doesn't involve currency rates — it's purely academic. However, PTA mobile registration tax (a separate tool) is affected by exchange rates. Your German grade conversion depends only on the three numerical inputs you provide and doesn't fluctuate with external rates.
