What is the Modified Bavarian Formula?

The Modified Bavarian Formula is the official grade conversion method standardised by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). Because grading systems worldwide operate on different scales — an 85% from Pakistan, a 3.8 GPA from the US, and a 7.5 CGPA from India cannot be directly compared — the formula resolves this by anchoring your grade between two fixed reference points: the highest possible score in your home system and the lowest acceptable passing score.

The closer your grade sits to your home system's maximum, the closer your German equivalent moves toward 1.0. A grade at the passing threshold converts to approximately 4.0. This proportional logic makes the formula fair across all grading systems without relying on lookup tables or fixed conversion charts.

Understanding the German 1.0 – 5.0 Scale

Germany uses a 1.0 to 5.0 scale where lower numbers mean better performance — the reverse of most systems. A perfect score is 1.0, a satisfactory pass sits around 3.0, and 4.0 is the final acceptable pass. Anything above 4.0 is a fail.

  • 1.0 – 1.5 (Sehr gut): Excellent. Strong applicant for elite programs at TUM, RWTH, and LMU.
  • 1.6 – 2.5 (Gut): Good. Competitive at most German public universities for Engineering and CS master's.
  • 2.6 – 3.5 (Befriedigend): Satisfactory. May qualify at Fachhochschulen and some public university programs.
  • 3.6 – 4.0 (Ausreichend): Sufficient. Marginal pass — limited admissions options at research universities.
  • 4.1 – 5.0 (Nicht bestanden): Fail. Does not meet admission requirements for German universities.

For Pakistani students, the most common inputs are:

  • Percentage-based (HEC): Nmax = 100, Nmin = 40 or 50 (check your university regulations), Nd = your percentage
  • CGPA out of 4.0: Nmax = 4.0, Nmin = 2.0, Nd = your CGPA
  • CGPA out of 10: Nmax = 10, Nmin = 5.0, Nd = your CGPA
